AceIS – Ace Internet Services

Your best bet for Internet Services

I did another personality/work style profile today for work…

Previously I have done RightPath (I’m a Driver) so it didn’t really surprise me when I took the StrengthsFinder.com online questionairre and it ranks your 5 biggest strengths that mine were:

  1. Deliberative (is that really a word though)
  2. Analytical
  3. Achiever
  4. Maximizer
  5. Relator

Nothing really jumped out at me other than my number one is Deliberative – I guess because I analyze a lot, but once I have a decent amount of info I make a decision and go with it…   I like the focus on the strengths because that is the way I approach life – I know I have strengths and I’m self-aware enough to realize I have several weaknesses as well, but my driver attitude and non-emotional detachment ability makes me not care as long as I get things done :)

In any case, this one was ok, but I think I like the rightpath profile better even though it focuses on the negatives as well as the positives.

Haven’t had much time today to look, but here are a few that are decent and available at the time of this post – I really like the use of the first one as an org/info site:

I’ve been thinking a bit about domain names that you just register (yes, there are some good ones available no matter what “they” say) versus trying to pay for drops or just trying to catch drops yourself…

New vs Drop domains:

I still think it pays to do some research or pay someone you trust to look for domains for you – you can do it yourself, but it is time consuming and tedious stuff unless I’m just missing something – I know there are some people offering tools to let you see the best domains dropping and getting them for you, but from what I’ve seen they are very expensive.   For the prices I’ve seen, I could register a few hundred domains a month and still be under the cost of the tool – maybe that is the key if the tool allows you to get one REALLY good domain it would be worth it, but isn’t EVERYONE who has access to the tool trying to get the same domain?

Buying Domains:

Buying domains that are for sale on sites like SEDO.com, AfterNic.com, Godaddy.com and many others are usually tough unless you have a decent amount of cash on hand – many really good domains can be negotiated, but often they will still want several thousand dollars.  The great thing is you know the commodity – you can look at site stats or parking stats, google analytics, keyword searches etc to determine what it might be worth to your business or portfolio of domains…  I personally don’t usually go this route, but I have bought a few that were in this range for very specific purposes, but I am still struggling with the ROI on my decision… time will tell.

Anyway, I guess I am wondering what your thoughts are on the matter and what your experiences are and any reasoning you have for going after domains in one of these manners…

Happy hunting!

Many of these are probably gone now, but worth checking out:

Should be an interesting few days upcoming…  I had some interest in advertising a specific product for quite a while now and I had some credits for both Google Adwords and Facebook Ads that were expiring soon so I spent some time learning a lot about how to use those advertising mediums over the last couple weeks.  My ad campaigns are both active finally and the first day’s results have been suprising…

I did an A/B split test with Google (Google adwords rocks, but then again, that is how they make money) and I have found some interesting facts with just one day of results which isn’t a large enough sample to be definitive, but if it remains consistent over the next days my assumptions going in will be WAY off…  I’ll let you know about that one and the overall results next week.

In the meantime, one of my previous projects is really taking off more than I expected – there are some incredible internet companies right now doing some cool development in mass that I think is the future of online commerce…. well, at least the next couple years – things always have a tendency to shift when lots of money starts changing hands!  Here’s to some of it coming your way – and mine! :)

A couple of typos and a couple nice .net that I may pick up if nobody does soon…

Had a strange problem today where we had a WebLogic instance setup as a primary and another box/instance as the secondary…  All HTTP traffic going to primary, terminology got us though as admin thought the secondary was only for failover…  it was processing background/application processes and the vendor app wasn’t written thread-safe so we saw some very odd problems…  Fun stuff.
